There is something undeniably nostalgic about cookies and cream. It's a childhood treat that carries over into adulthood for those of us with even the most refined palates. And turning that into a decadent cookies and cream milkshake is the ultimate treat.
In our house everyday could be a milkshake day. I do not need a special occasion to make one. We even have the traditional milkshake glasses and an old school blender to bring us right back to our favorite ice cream shop.
Cookies and cream is a classic ice cream flavor, and my oreo ice cream is something we always have in the freezer. Creating a cookies and cream milkshake was kind of a no-brainer since it is easily one o f my faves, the kids' fave and such a popular flavor with everyone.
The rich, deliciousness of a classic milkshake blended with crunchy, chocolatey cookie bits. It's a treat that instantly transports you to your childhood in the best possible way.

Why you'll love this milkshake recipe
I probably don't have to give you any reasons to love a cookies and cream milkshake, but beyond how delicious it is, here are a few reasons this is a great recipe:
- Oreo milk is delicious. This is my secret ingredient in this milkshake recipe that I think puts it above all others. And oreo milk isn't just for milkshakes. It is an ingredient in my oreo ice cream recipe, and is something you can add use to make an amazing latte, smoothie, or even in oatmeal. Making it couldn't be easier either.
- In addition to the oreo milk, you get extra crunch by adding more cookies when blending, and a nice crumble on top.
- It is easily adaptable to your preferences. You can add all manner of different things to a cookies and cream milkshake to make it a little different every time.
Ingredients
Milkshakes take minimal ingredients, making them one of the easiest things to make , especially in a pinch. Here's what you need for a cookies and cream milkshake
- Oreo milk. Basically this is just steeping oreos in milk until they are soft enough to be totally combined with the milk. Add a ¼ cup of broken up Oreos to ½ cup of milk and let them sit in the fridge for a bit, at minimum a half hour, and then shake to break them up and incorporate them fully into the milk. You can of course double or triple this and use it other awesome ways, but the ½ cup of milk to ¼ cup oreos is the exact amount you need for this milkshake.
- Vanilla ice cream.
- Oreo cookies, or another brand of equivalent oreos (ie. Trader Joe-Joe's)
- Whipped cream and extra crushed cookies on top. I guess optional, but not to me.
Instructions
While old school milkshake machines are awesome, they are not the best for something like a cookies and cream milkshake. They don't do a great job of blending the crunchy cookies into the milkshake. I recommend using a blender for this, instead as it ensures everything mixes up creamy and delicious. That being said, to make this, simply throw all the ingredients, except the whipped cream into the blender and blitz it up until fully combined and smooth and creamy. Couldn't be easier.
Ingredient swaps and variations
One of the best things about milkshakes is how incredibly adaptable they are. So long as you stick to the liquid to ice cream ratio you can totally mix this up and make it different every time. Here are some ideas:
- Add a drizzle of chocolate syrup. Drizzle some velvety chocolate syrup on top of your milkshake or around the inside of the glass before adding the whipped cream. It adds an extra layer of decadence.
- Use a different kind of ice cream. You could most certainly use oreo cookie ice cream in this milkshake or try with chocolate ice cream, mint ice cream or peanut butter ice cream.
- Throw a couple strawberries in the blender to add some berry flavor.
- Make this with vanilla oreos instead. This is a great option for the non chocolate lovers out there.
Top tips
- Most important when making a cookies and cream milkshake or any milkshake is to get the right liquid to ice cream ratio to give you a perfectly smooth, not-too-thick, but just just-thick-enough milkshake. After years of trial and error with this I believe the perfect ratio is ½ cup of liquid (milk AND any other liquid you will be using, such as syrups or sauces) and 1 ½ cups (equal to three large scoops) of ice cream.
- Do not use heavy cream in place of milk under any circumstance. Trust me on this, I have tried it before thinking it will result in an extra creamy shake, and it does not. The fat in the cream freezes and becomes chunky little bits of fat. NOT GOOD!
